Why a European Year of Combating Violence against Women?
Violence against women, in all its forms, is a major hindrance to gender equality and is one of the most outrageous human rights violations.
This concerns not only you but also your next door neighbour, your colleague at work as well as your own family members. There is no geographical, financial, cultural or social border or limit to this human rights violation.
In the European, 20 to 25% of women suffer physical violence in their adult life and over 10% are the victims of sexual violence. Look around you.
It is high time we aroused public awareness and to mobilize European governments to this hard task. Abused women should no longer be ashamed and be silent. Violent men should rigorously be taught to be respectful to women and to be responsible to the society; and children too need protection.
Let us, men and women, unite to fight against this hideous crime.
